Views from the Watershed tours explore the landscape, history, and politics of the NYC water supply in the Catskills. NYC’s water supply has shaped the Catskills’ landscape and economy for more than a century. The relationship between the two places, 100+ miles apart, is forged by water. It’s an extraordinarily complicated and fascinating story—and if you drink NYC water or spend time in the Catskills, it’s a story worth knowing.
A self-guided driving tour of the NYC drinking water watershed in the Catskills! Learn how water shapes the past, present, and future of the Catskills from the firsthand, intimate perspectives of watershed stakeholders and stewards.

The Views from the Watershed bus tour program was launched in Summer 2019. We visited the two largest reservoirs in the system, the Ashokan and the Pepacton, and resonant places in between. We heard stories of the watershed that ran from the profound to the everyday from tour leader Lize Mogel and special guests including local historians, water experts, and others. Participants called the experience “mind blowing,” “wonderful and informative” and “riveting”! (Tours were cancelled in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.)
